Hội An: Really Worth the Hype?

Hội An at night with its many lanterns and pretty lights.

I was staying in the popular holiday destination spot Đà Nẵng for a couple of days. Due to it being right next to Hội An it was a given to go to this beautiful town for a nice day trip. I heard that its ancient town, lantern-lit streets and rich cultural heritage are a must-visit destination for travelers. And oh boy, when I tell you I watched some Instagram Reels beforehand I mean I probably scrolled through every glowing IG video about Hội An and maybe got a liiiiittle obsessed. So, does it live up to its reputation? Did I get disappointed or is Hội An indeed worth the hype?

Let's delve deeper into the allure of this enchanting town.

The Ancient Town

One of the main draws of Hội An is the impeccably preserved ancient town, a true UNESCO World Heritage site. Here you can be transported back in time. The architecture is nostalgic with a mix of colorful French & Asian style houses. Wander through narrow alleyways lined with centuries-old buildings, ornate temples, and pretty, diverse shops adorned with glowing lanterns. Let go while strolling through the small streets and enjoy this special glimpse into Vietnam's rich past. I didn’t recognize the hours passing by while doing so, because it was just so beautiful.

Dive Into Cultural Experiences

Beyond its picturesque streets, Hội An offers visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in Vietnamese culture and traditions. From participating in traditional cooking classes and hands-on workshops like lantern-making to exploring vibrant markets - this town provides experiences that show Vietnam's vibrant heritage. You could also go on a ride on one of the traditional, round basket boats. But I didn’t experience them myself because they seem to be rotating veeeery quickly and I get easily sick to my stomach when exposed to rotary movement. xD But go for it if you can, people say these ancient boats are a must-do activity.

Pretty Old Canals Boat Ride

But there is another, calmer boat ride option in the Old Town of Hội An. ^^ The canals here are decorated with shining lanterns. We went in the evening when it was already dark outside, so it was a very romantic experience. Don’t forget to look out for the famous Japanese bridge that crosses the river along your boat ride. It is well-preserved and beautifully lit up in the evening hours, as well.

Numerous Culinary Delights

Hội An is a paradise for food lovers, trust me. You can find bustling markets, street stalls, and restaurants at the riverside which offer countless Vietnamese specialties. Dining along the picturesque waterfront or under the glow of lanterns adds to the ambiance, creating memorable dining experiences.
One of the dishes that needs to be pointed out is Bánh Mì, because Hội An counts as the capital of this savory, Vietnamese classic. There are so many stalls in the streets selling really good Bánh Mì. The stalls can get pretty crowded by tourists. That’s why if you have a certain seller in mind, come here early. Because otherwise you might get disappointed if during the day all the Bánh Mìs get sold out. It happened to me once myself: I had my eyes on a certain stall and by the time I arrived, there were no more Bánh Mìs left to be sold. Ouch.

More Than the Ancient Town

While the ancient town may steal the spotlight in most reviews, the surrounding countryside equally deserves attention. Here you can escape the hustle of the town center and venture into the peaceful countryside, for example by going on a nice bike tour. Cycle along quiet country roads and rice fields and enjoy sights of this region, that are not so often pictured on social media.

So: Is It Worth the Hype?

To make it quickly: Yes! Hội An indeed is worth its hype. Be it the timeless beauty you can find here, rich cultural heritage, and numerous authentic experiences - this town is a special destination in Vietnam that holds a dear spot in my heart. And that counts for many other travelers, as well. :) So if you come to Vietnam, then stop by and discover the enchanting town of Hội An and get mesmerized by its scenic beauty.
