Seoul at Night - You’ll Feel Safe

Even more beautiful at night: Seoul streets and amazing skyscrapers.

Disclaimer

While Seoul is generally considered a safe city (especially in comparison to many other major cities around the world) it's important to be careful and show awareness. Especially so, when walking around alone at night. For that case I’ve collected some tips for you at the end of this page. :)

Still though, so far I’ve experienced Seoul as a city that feels safe to me even when exploring it after the sun sets. And here I share why that is.

Shining Example for Safety

From its well-lit streets to its efficient public transportation system, there are many factors that contribute to Seoul's reputation as a safe city after dark. To me it’s always been a welcoming and secure environment for residents and visitors like me.

Seoul Literally Glows

The city of Seoul takes pride in its well-lit streets and public spaces, which play a crucial role in ensuring safety. From major, big places to quiet alleyways, the streets are illuminated by streetlights and outdoor lighting, creating a sense of visibility and security. This contributes to a comfortable environment for pedestrians in the dark. Also CCTV cameras are installed in every street corner possible, which brought me personally a major feeling of safety.

The After Sunset Buzz

There's always something going on in Seoul after sunset: Be it party and entertainment districts like Hongdae and Gangnam or traditional (night) markets and late-night restaurants. The vibrant nightlife with its establishments and people they attract are also often well-patrolled and monitored by police officers.

It’s Just So Normal

Whether it's a late-night stroll through a residential area or the visit to a convenience store across the street: People are just going on about their business without fear or hesitation. That’s why it became totally normal to me as well, to go my ways and be active at night time. No one really cared or was in any way disrespectful to me. I just tried to blend in. The staff in my neighborhood cafés or convenience stores even knew me at some point. They checked-in on me from time to time, so I felt like they look out after me which also brought me a positive feeling of safety.

Still: Consider the Following for Your Safety

Please, be on the side of caution and take measures to ensure your safety when being out alone at night.

  • Use common sense and trust your instincts. If an area feels unsafe, better avoid it and find an alternative route.

  • Stick to well-lit streets and avoid dark areas. Well-lit areas tend to be more visible to passersby and law enforcement.

  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times. I even always avoided distractions like listening to music with my headphones on.

  • If you feel uncomfortable in a situation, trust your intuition and remove yourself from the situation (for example crossing the street, go to a nearby business/convenience store/resident).

  • Don’t trink too much: If you plan to drink alcohol while out at night, please do so responsibly and in moderation. Excessive alcohol consumption can have a negative impact on your judgment.

  • Inform someone you trust of your plans and itinerary if you'll be out alone at night. Provide them with details of your route, so they can check in on you. Also: Carry a charged mobile phone with emergency contacts.

To wrap it up: Follow at least some of these precautions so that - just like me - you can enjoy exploring Seoul even at night with a peaceful mind. :)
